The creation of the Mad Dog Mandich Fishing Classic filled Jim and Bonnie Mandich with great pride and joy, as they loved to bring family, friends and the community together for a great weekend of fishing and fellowship, all while supporting Mariner Hospital’s Oncology Services. The Mad Dog Mandich Fishing Classic honors their memory.

Jim "Mad Dog" Mandich

Jim "Mad Dog" Mandich, had an illustrious career that was centered around South Florida. Jim graduated from the University of Michigan in 1969 where he was an "All American Tight End" for the Wolverines. He was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the first round and was a popular tight end on the great Dolphin Super Bowl teams in the 1970s, playing for the club from 1970 through 1977. He was a member of two Super Bowl winning squads (finished his career with the Dolphins with 121 receptions for 1,406 yards and 23 touchdowns). When he left the Dolphins, he ranked sixth in team annals in receptions, tied for second in touchdown catches, and tied for seventh in scoring. Even now, in current Dolphin history, he is second among tight ends in scoring, fifth in receptions, and second in touchdown catches. After winning two Super Bowls with the Dolphins and one with the Steelers he made South Florida his permanent residence.

Bonnie Mandich

Bonnie was a Jersey girl at heart and a devoted Mother of three boys (Michael, Mark & Nick) and loving wife to Jim "Mad Dog" Mandich. The couple wed in August 1981 and Bonnie supported Jim’s efforts on and off the field, while raising an amazing family. She had stunning beauty being named Miss Vermont in her early years. She was an accomplished equestrian that competed in Hunter and Jumper competitions throughout her life. She loved her animals having many cats and horses. In 2010, Mad Dog became the face of the Dolphins’ Cancer Challenge to raise money for Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. Bonnie Mandich was on the Challenge’s board of directors continuing to raise millions of dollars for cancer research after Jim's death.

After his playing career ended, Jim embarked on a successful business and civic career in South Florida and became a beloved member of the Dolphin broadcast team for 17 years. His famous "All Right!" exclamation became his hallmark catch phrase. His passion for the Miami Dolphins was evident in every broadcast he did and his unique on-air presence and personality captivated Dolphin fans everywhere.

Since his early days in South Florida, Jim loved fishing. The creation of the Mad Dog Mandich Fishing Classic filled him with great pride and joy. He was proud to bring his family, friends and the community together for this fun event, all while supporting community organizations and charities. Jim and his wife Bonnie were involved with several charities throughout South Florida and it was important to him to create awareness and financial support for these organizations. The formation of the Mad Dog Mandich Fishing Classic helped to further his cause. More than that, he got great joy in bringing everyone to together for a great weekend of fishing and fellowship.

The Mad Dog Mandich Fishing Classic is a family fun fishing tournament in Islamorada in the Florida Keys offering Offshore and Inshore Fishing Divisions. Proceeds from the event benefit Mariners Hospital's Oncology Services.
