4th Annual Mad Dog Mandich Fishing Classic
Awards Over $20,000 in Cash Prizes

The 4th Annual Publix Mad Dog Mandich Fishing Classic, May 20th and 21st, 2011, was a huge success. The tournament, in honor of Jim “Mad Dog” Mandich, hosted one hundred and thirty anglers who competed and enjoyed a fantastic weekend of fun for the entire family.

The one-day fishing tournament, which benefited Shake-a-Leg Miami and the Coastal Conservation Association, targeted dolphin, kingfish, tuna and wahoo. The event kicked off Friday evening with a festive Kick-Off Party and Captain’s meeting at Texas de Brazil. Anglers received Hook & Tackle Solar tournament shirts, hats and Publix angler bags stuffed with goodies.

On Saturday, a beautiful, sunny morning greeted the teams as they headed out of Government Cut for a day of fishing. The competition was strong, but after all the fish were weighed in, the winner was team Thomas Flyer  with a total of 80 points from the various fish they weighed. The team, captained by Jimbo Thomas, took home total winnings of $12,125. This was for the $10,000 Top Boat prize and 1st Place Fun Fish Fortune for $2,125. Rick Thomas, also aboard Thomas Flyer, captured the title of Top Angler. Second place in the tournament was won by team 305, captained by Matt Tambor with 71.80 points. Team 305 also won the Double Decker and 2nd place Funfish Fortune added values, along with the heaviest Kingfish brought in by Mike Green. They took home a total of $5,305.00. Third place was Contender One with 66.90 points, who also won 3rd place Funfish Fortune. The Top Lady Angler award was won for the second year in a row by Stephanie Gordon aboard XFactor/Team Fly Girls with 23 points. This team also took the Mega Mahi added value prize of $3,187.50. Top Junior was won by Kyle Coto aboard Samaniky from El Capitan Sports Center. Not only did he win by weighing a 12.70 lb kingfish, but it was the first he had ever caught.

After the weigh-in and dock party, anglers, sponsors and guests enjoyed a fantastic dinner hosted by Joe Rose at Texas de Brazil. During the awards ceremony the Mad Dog Mandich Fishing Classic was proud to donate $7,000 to Shake-a-Leg Miami and $2,500 to the Coastal Conservation Association. These donations have brought the tournament’s charitable donations to over $100,000.

The Publix Mad Dog Mandich Fishing Classic will host its Florida Keys tournament on October 7th & 8th, 2011 at the Chesapeake Beach Resort in Islamorada, Florida.
